Primary Source #1: "NATIONAL HONOR IS THE HIGHEST PROPERTY OF THE HIGHEST VALUE."
James Monroe said this quote about national honor during the time of the Era of Good Feelings and his presidency. This quotation means that he believes that national honor is extremely important. During the time of the Era of Good Feelings, America gained much more confidence as a whole, after defeating Britain for what would be the last time, and also because there was only one political party in power. In fact, one of the main goals that James Monroe had when he took office was to better unify the nation. Thus, the Era of Good Feelings was a name given to this short time in history where America was the most happy and had the most national honor. Therefore, James Monroe believed that national honor was the most important aspect of America.
Primary source #2: "If we look to the history of other nations, ancient or modern, we find no example of a growth so rapid, so gigantic, of a people so prosperous and happy."
James Monroe said this during the Era of Good Feelings. To clarify, Monroe says that other nations did not have a growth so quickly of as happy and prosperous people. During the Era of Good Feelings, America gained a lot of confidence and overall, all citizens were happy. For example, America had just defeated Britain in the war, and the Monroe Doctrine increased their status compared to other states. Therefore, for this brief era in history, American society was thriving. In the history of other nations, that generally does not happen. In this quotation, Monroe says that never in other nations, do we find a growth so fast full of happy people.
