Between the years 1817 to 1824, there was a period of national confidence, which became known as the Era of Good Feelings. When the War of 1812 had ended, the Federalist Party disbanded, therefore, causing the Democratic Republican party to become immensely popular. This one party dominance lead President James Monroe to easily win the election of 1816 and to serve two successful terms in office with goals of unifying the country. As a result, this time in history is also associated with nationalism. Furthermore, the Era of Good Feelings contributed both positive and negative effects to american society.
Although this time in history is known as the "Era of Good Feelings" not all of the feelings were good. In America during this time there were several tensions. The Era of Good Feelings ended in the election of 1824 that became known as a "corrupt bargain". Other events that contributed to the end of the Era of Good Feelings were the Panic of 1819, the Missouri Compromise, the Monroe Doctrine, increasing slavery, the Supreme Court Case McCulloch vs Maryland and more. However, during the Era of Good Feelings many aspects of America improved. For example, the American System benefited the economy, there was little disagreement on political parties, and America as a whole exhibited much more national pride.

President James Monroe was the 5th President of the United States. In addition to being the last Revolutionary War veteran to take office, he was also the last Founding Father of the United States to be President. As president, he hoped in helping to form a more nationalist country. In order to accomplish this, he toured around New England. Monroe was the first president to travel while in office since George Washington. Moreover, he is also well known for writing the Monroe Doctrine, with the help of John Quincy Adams. Lastly, he served two successful terms in office. He was an extremely popular and admired president.
